This access statement does not contain our personal opinions as to our suitability for those with access needs, but aims to accurately describe the facilities and services that we offer all of our guests/visitors.

INTRODUCTION

Situated in North Northumberland, 3 miles south of Berwick, The Island View Inn is an ideal base for exploring the Northumbrian countryside.  We are also ideally located for anybody travelling through the area as we are located on the side of the A1 road.  There are good bus links into Berwick upon Tweed, and also heading south, there are bus stops right outside our property for both directions of travel.  If not travelling by car or bus there are several local taxi companies available for anybody arriving in Berwick by train or other means of travel.

We offer 7 en-suite bedrooms, all of which are on the upper floor of our property.  All bedrooms, are non-smoking.  Pets are allowed (by arrangement only).

Breakfast is provided for guests in our restaurant, we use locally sourced produce where possible in both our breakfasts, and on the full restaurant menu.  We are also happy to cater for any special dietary requirements.

PRE-ARRIVAL

For full details of how to find us please see the directions section of our website.  Alternatively, you  can plan your journey by car or public transport using www.transportdirect.info ; simply enter your postcode and ours, which is TD15 2RL to get directions.  However, when using our postcode, please note that this postcode covers an area of a few miles.  Please do not turn off the A1 if instructed to do so at the Cheswick turnoff.  Please remain on the A1, we are about 1 mile north of this Cheswick turnoff, directly on the roadside.

The nearest railway station is Berwick upon Tweed.  This station is approx. 4 miles from us and has direct routes to the north and south.  Taxi’s are available at the station.  If you require an accessible taxi this can be booked in advance, see contact information for details.

There is a bus stop directly outside our building, heading north, with a bus shelter in one of our outbuildings.  Both buses which stop here, the X15, and the X18 travel to the railway station in Berwick before heading south again.

Travelling south, there is no bus stop, however if you cross the road outside the building and wait on the pavement at the roadside, both the X15 and the X18 will stop to pick up and drop off.

The x15 and the x18 provide wheelchair access.

 

CAR PARKING AND ARRIVAL

We have a large car park covering the front, side and rear of the building available for all guests to use.  A number of these spaces are located very close to the main entrance. In the evenings the car parking spaces around the building are well lit.  These lights are switched off at approx. 11pm.

Assistance can be given with luggage upon request.

 

CHECK IN

Inside the main entrance guests may either turn left, into the restaurant, or right, into the bar to check in.  There is a small step into the bar area, for which there is a sign on the door to warn visitors.  The main doors are 114cm wide.

There is ample seating in both the bar and restaurant, both fixed cushioned benches with cushioned backs, wooden seats, and cushioned seats and stools.

The entrance hallway and bar are tiled, while the restaurant has laminate flooring.  Both areas are well lit, with both ceiling and wall lights.

A magnifying glass, pen and pad of paper are all available on request.

Guests are shown up to there rooms where possible, otherwise given their keys and given directions up to their rooms.

 

BEDROOMS

All bedrooms are on the upper floor of the building, therefore unsuitable for anybody who cannot transfer out of a wheelchair to climb the stairs.

ROOM 1

This is a family room with the childrens bunk beds in an annex joined onto the main bedroom.  Door width is 71cm.  The kingsize bed in this room is 63cm from floor to the top of the mattress.  Bottom bunk is 48cm from floor to top of mattress, the upper bunk is accessible using a metal ladder attached to the bed frame.

The bathroom door is 67cm wide.  The shower in this room is a large rectangular cubicle.  Shower tray is 26cm from the floor.  Wash basin height is 83cm from the floor.  Toilet seat height is 41cm.

ROOM 2

This is a twin room, with 2 single beds.  There is sufficient space to walk around both sides of each bed.  Bed height is 54cm from floor to the top of the mattress.

The bathroom door in this room is 57cm wide.  The shower cubicle is square and is 63cm x 63cm.  The shower tray is 24cm from the floor.  Wash basin height is 76cm from the floor.  Toilet seat height is 42cm.

ROOM 3

This is a twin room with 2 single beds.  There is sufficient space to walk around both sides of each bed.  Bed height is 60cm from the floor to the top of the mattress.

The bathroom door in this room is 72cm wide.  The shower cubicle is rectangular, and is 103cm x 59cm.  The shower tray is 15cm from the floor.  Wash basin height is 81cm.  Toilet seat height is 42cm.

ROOM 5

This is a double room.  The double bed height is 59cm from the floor to the top of the mattress.  There is sufficient space to walk comfortably around both sides of the bed.

The bathroom in this room is tiled, walls and floor.  There is a full size bath tub with overhead shower.  Wash basin height is 84cm from the floor.  Toilet seat height is 42cm.  Bath side is 56cm from the floor.

ROOM 6

This is a family room consisting of one double bed and one single.  Both beds are 50cm from floor to the top of the mattress.  There is sufficient space to walk around the double bed.  The single bed is against a wall to one side, therefore access to this bed is restricted to one side.

There is a small step into the shower room of 7cm.  The doorway into this room is 56cm wide.  The shower tray is 29cm from the floor level.  Wash basin height is 82cm from the floor.  Toilet seat height is 42cm.

ROOM 7

This is a twin room.  There is sufficient space to walk around both sides of each of the single beds.  Bed height is 50cm from floor to the top of the mattress.  The bathroom door in this room is 63cm wide.  There is a triangular shaped shower cubicle which is 98cm along the door side, and 55cm x 55cm along the other two walls.  There is a 24cm step into this shower cubicle.  Wash basin height is 85cm from the floor.  Toilet seat height is 43cm.

ROOM 8

This is a family room consisting of one double and two single beds.  The double bed has sufficient space to walk around both sides.  The twin beds are both set aside each other both against a wall each.  Access to these beds is therefore restricted to one side each.  Each of these single beds are 52cm from floor to the top of the mattress.  The double bed is 68cm from floor to the top of the mattress.  The access door into the bathroom of this room is 67cm wide.  The shower cubicle is rectangular and is 103cm x 59cm.  There is a step of 24cm into the shower tray from floor level.  Wash basin height is 81cm from the floor.  Toilet seat height is 42cm.

 

All bedroom main doors are 71cm wide.

All rooms are brightly lit, with both overhead lights, and bedside lamps.

Blocks are available to raise beds on request.

All rooms and en-suites have a good colour contrast between floors, carpets, and walls/skirting boards, doors and furnishings.

All en-suites other than room 5 have vinyl flooring.  Room 5 is tiled.

All guests are provided with a non slip bathroom mat to place on the floor.

All guests are provided with a non slip bath/shower mat to place inside of the shower cubicle/bath.

Shower seat is available on request.

 

PUBLIC AREAS

All public areas are well lit, with a combination of ceiling and wall lights.

There is a short pile carpet in the guest hallway and stairs.

There is a continuous flight of 14 stairs.  Each 18cm high.  There is a handrail running down the length of the stairs to one side.

 

RESTAURANT

The restaurant is situated on the ground floor, with level entry.  The door to the dining room is 84cm wide.

There is laminate floor throughout the restaurant.

Lighting consists of both natural lighting through the day, and wall and ceiling lights also.

We are able to cater for various dietary requirements.  Please advise us when making a booking.

Orders are taken by waiting staff from your table, crockery etc is all provided at the table.

At breakfast there is a range of cereals, fruits and juices which you can help yourself to, although assistance is available if required.  All hot breakfast items are served to you at your table.

 

PUBLIC TOILETS

Public toilets are accessed through the restaurant.  There is a main entrance door into the toilet hallway, this is 70cm wide.  The corridor is 94cm wide.  There is an additional door into each the ladies and the gents, and a further door into a toilet cubicle in each.  All of these interior doors are 73cm wide.  The toilet seat in both the ladies and gents is 42cm from the floor.  The wash basin is 84cm from the floor in both also.  The toilet cubicle in the ladies is 140cm x 79cm.  The toilet cubicle in the gents is 143cm x 83cm.  The toilet area is well lit with ceiling lights, and has tiled floors throughout.  There are no steps.

 

BAR

The bar is situated on the ground floor.  There is a small step into the bar 7cm.  The bar door is 84cm wide.  Inside the bar has a tiled floor, and is well lit.  There is a selection of seating available ranging in height from 48cm, to bar stools at 76cm.  We have seating with hard backs and soft backs.  Drinks are usually purchased at the bar and carried by the guest to the table, however assistance can be provided with this when requested.

 

GARDEN

There is a paved patio area outside the main entrance, there are no steps here.  There are picnic bench/table sets available for use.  And table service is available upon request.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

We have a set of evacuation procedures, where required.  Somebody will be available to assist you with evacuation.

A water bowl is available outside at all times for assistance dogs.  Water bowls/ food bowls are available on request in the bedrooms and bar.
